Description

The Department of Philology is organized into three specialization tracks: Classical Studies, Medieval and Modern Greek Studies, and Linguistics. It aims to train future philologists and linguists, providing them with advanced knowledge and a deep understanding of the Greek language and literature throughout its history and in relation to other cultures, while keeping up with both existing and new research trends. The School aims to provide students with a solid foundation and the skills necessary to become highly qualified teachers of philological subjects within Greek education. It also equips them with up-to-date theoretical knowledge and methodological tools to excel as researchers or pursue professional careers in research centers and academic institutions.

Relation to Employment

Graduates of the Department of Philology can work: a) in public and private primary and secondary education, teaching courses, provided they meet the specific requirements (competitions, exams, point systems, or other regulations) for employment in these institutions; b) in publishing houses; c) in research centers; d) in any organization that requires graduates of Philology, or university graduates in general, for scientific or administrative work.

Access Requirements / Progression Opportunities

Admission to the program requires a Secondary School Leaving Certificate (High School Diploma) and successful participation in national-level examinations.

Knowledge

The Undergraduate Program of the Department of Philology aims to educate scholars with a solid knowledge of Greek (from antiquity to the present) and Latin language and literature, as well as literary theory and linguistics. It seeks to promote philological and linguistic scholarship and to develop skills that enable graduates to engage in research, education, publishing, translation, and cultural activities.

Skills

Graduates of the Department of Philology, depending on their course choices, acquire skills in teaching philological subjects and Modern Greek (both as a native and as a second/foreign language), supporting and conducting philological and linguistic research, as well as in writing teaching manuals and curriculum programs. Additionally, they are active in the publishing sector (editing, selecting content, publishing, and translating texts from various historical periods) and in processing natural language using computational tools.

Competences

Graduates of the Department of Philology, beyond their core academic training, possess skills in applying knowledge, researching, analyzing, and synthesizing information using new technologies, as well as in adapting to situations and making decisions. At the same time, they develop skills for independent and collaborative work in international and interdisciplinary environments, project creation and management, communication in a second language, respect for diversity, and the exercise of critical, responsible, and independent thinking.
