Description
The Bachelor's Degree in Conservation of Antiquities and Works of Art is offered by the Department of Conservation of Antiquities and Works of Art of the University of West Attica. The programme provides comprehensive scientific and laboratory education in the examination, documentation, preventive conservation, restoration and preservation of cultural heritage objects. Students acquire knowledge in natural sciences, chemistry, art history, material technologies and modern conservation methods through theoretical, laboratory and practical training.
Relation to Employment
Graduates can find employment in museums, archaeological services, conservation laboratories, cultural organizations, research institutions, private conservation laboratories, art galleries, and cultural heritage protection agencies, or work as independent professionals.
Access Requirements / Progression Opportunities
A high school diploma and successful completion of the Panhellenic or placement exams are required. The degree is awarded upon successful completion of eight semesters and 240 ECTS credits.
Knowledge
Graduates possess comprehensive and specialized knowledge in the conservation of antiquities and works of art, supported by a strong background in archaeology, art history, chemistry, physics, biology, materials science and artistic practices. They understand the technology of cultural heritage materials, deterioration mechanisms, documentation and diagnostic methods, preventive and interventive conservation techniques, and the principles governing the protection and management of cultural heritage.
Skills
Graduates develop skills in identifying and documenting the manufacturing technology and conservation condition of cultural heritage objects, applying modern scientific and laboratory examination methods, designing and implementing conservation projects, using specialized laboratory and digital equipment, evaluating conservation interventions and producing scientific documentation. They also develop research, analytical and problem-solving skills for complex conservation issues.
Competences
Graduates are capable of planning, organizing and implementing preventive and interventive conservation projects for antiquities, works of art and historical artefacts, selecting appropriate diagnostic and conservation methodologies based on scientific evidence and professional ethics. They are able to work independently or within multidisciplinary teams, contribute to the protection and promotion of cultural heritage, apply emerging technologies and respond responsibly to the requirements of museums, archaeological services, conservation laboratories and research institutions.
