Description
The Bachelor's Degree in Wine, Vine and Beverage Sciences is offered by the Department of Wine, Vine and Beverage Sciences of the School of Food Sciences at the University of West Attica. The programme provides comprehensive education in viticulture, oenology, wine and beverage technology, chemistry, microbiology, biochemistry, quality assurance, food safety and vineyard management. Students acquire scientific knowledge and laboratory skills for production, quality control, evaluation and innovation in the wine and beverage sector.
Relation to Employment
The program prepares graduates for employment at wineries, distilleries, breweries, the beverage industry, viticulture companies, quality control laboratories, certification bodies, research institutions, companies developing new products, and food and beverage quality and safety assurance services. There are also opportunities to continue studies at the master’s and doctoral levels.
Access Requirements / Progression Opportunities
Admission to the program requires a Secondary School Leaving Certificate (High School Diploma) and successful participation in national-level examinations.
Knowledge
• Demonstrate scientific and technological knowledge in oenology, viticulture, beverage technology and water management.
• Understand production, processing, quality control, hygiene, quality certification and suitability assessment procedures for wine products, beverages and water.
• Understand the regulatory, environmental and technical framework governing wine, beer and beverage enterprises and related laboratories.
• Possess knowledge of the organisation of wine, brewery and beverage enterprises, as well as the requirements for establishing and operating tasting, analysis and control laboratories.
Skills
• Apply production, processing, analysis and quality control procedures to wine products, beverages, water and related by-products.
• Design and implement research and development programmes in oenology, beverage technology and water management.
• Prepare techno-economic studies for the establishment, construction, expansion or operational improvement of wine, beer and beverage enterprises and facilities.
• Provide technical support on quality, suitability, environmental obligations, legal compliance and the utilisation of by-products or waste.
Competences
• Work professionally in the production, quality assurance, certification and control of wine products, beverages and water.
• Organise and support the operation of wine, brewery and beverage enterprises, as well as tasting, analysis and control laboratories.
• Act as experts before control authorities, market inspection bodies or courts on issues related to the quality and suitability of wines and beverages.
• Collaborate with other specialists or work independently in planning, development, control and compliance activities in the fields of oenology and beverage technology.
