Description

The Bachelor's Degree in Midwifery is offered by the Department of Midwifery of the University of West Attica. The programme provides comprehensive scientific education in midwifery, obstetrics, gynaecology, neonatology, reproductive and sexual health, perinatal care, public health and evidence-based midwifery practice. Students acquire theoretical knowledge, laboratory training and extensive clinical experience in healthcare settings.

Relation to Employment

Graduates can find employment in public and private hospitals, obstetrics and gynecology clinics, health centers, primary health care facilities, assisted reproduction clinics, public health agencies, research institutions, or work as independent practitioners in accordance with applicable law.

Access Requirements / Progression Opportunities

A high school diploma and successful completion of the Panhellenic or placement exams are required. The degree is awarded upon successful completion of eight semesters and 240 ECTS credits.

Knowledge

Graduates possess comprehensive knowledge of midwifery, obstetrics, gynaecology and neonatology, together with the scientific disciplines underpinning midwifery practice. They acquire knowledge of biology, anatomy, physiology and pathophysiology of pregnancy, childbirth, the postpartum period and the newborn, professional ethics and legislation, public health, health promotion and evidence-based midwifery care. The programme aims to provide a strong scientific foundation in accordance with Directive 2005/36/EC and international standards for midwifery education.
 

Skills


Graduates develop skills in providing safe and comprehensive midwifery care, monitoring normal pregnancy, conducting normal childbirth, caring for postpartum women and newborns, identifying risk factors and making timely referrals when required. They also acquire skills in clinical decision-making, evidence-based practice, communication, interdisciplinary collaboration, use of modern technologies, research participation and continuous professional development.

Competences

Graduates are capable of practising autonomously and responsibly as midwives, providing high-quality care to women, newborns and families throughout the reproductive period. They are able to apply professional ethics, manage complex clinical situations within their scope of practice, collaborate effectively with other healthcare professionals, undertake leadership and managerial roles, adapt to scientific developments and contribute to the improvement of maternal and neonatal health through lifelong learning and research.
