Description
The Bachelor's Degree in Social Work is offered by the Department of Social Work of the University of West Attica. The programme provides scientific education in social work, social policy, social research, psychosocial support, protection of vulnerable groups and intervention at individual, family, group and community level. Students combine theoretical education with laboratory courses and extensive field placement.
Relation to Employment
Graduates can find employment in hospitals, health centers, social services, municipalities, social protection organizations, schools, mental health facilities, NGOs, correctional facilities, and other public or private social care institutions.
Access Requirements / Progression Opportunities
A high school diploma and successful completion of the Panhellenic or placement exams are required. The degree is awarded upon successful completion of eight semesters and 240 ECTS credits.
Knowledge
The program provides comprehensive scientific education in Social Work, covering the theories, methods, and fields of application of the discipline. Graduates acquire knowledge of social work theories, psychology, sociology, social anthropology, human development and behavior, child, adolescent and adult psychopathology, policies promoting human rights, social justice, equality, and social inclusion. They also gain knowledge of social research methods, intervention models and techniques, evaluation of social services, professional ethics, interdisciplinary collaboration, and the use of digital technologies and scientific resources to support evidence-based professional practice.
Skills
Graduates develop analytical, critical, and creative thinking skills, problem-solving, decision-making, information management, effective communication, negotiation, and mediation skills. They are able to design, implement, and evaluate prevention, early intervention, and social support programs for individuals, families, groups, communities, and organizations. They also acquire skills in data collection and analysis, social needs assessment, evidence-based intervention planning, mobilization of community resources, interdisciplinary teamwork, and the ethical practice of social work.
Competences
Graduates are competent to apply social work theories and methods across all fields of professional practice, assess social needs, design and implement interventions at individual, family, group, and community levels, and evaluate their effectiveness. They are able to contribute to social policy development, promote human rights, social justice, and social cohesion, work effectively within interdisciplinary teams, address complex social issues with professional responsibility, and foster social change, empowerment, and the social inclusion of vulnerable populations. They also possess the competences required for lifelong learning, continuous professional development, and further postgraduate and doctoral studies.
