Description
The Bachelor's Degree in Early Childhood Education and Care is offered by the Department of Early Childhood Education and Care of the University of West Attica. The programme provides scientific education in the care, development and education of children from birth to preschool age. Students acquire knowledge in pedagogy, developmental psychology, health, creative activities, special education and the organization of early childhood education settings through theoretical, laboratory and practical training.
Relation to Employment
Graduates find employment in nurseries and daycare centers, early childhood education facilities, creative activity centers, family support programs, and related public or private organizations.
Access Requirements / Progression Opportunities
A high school diploma and successful completion of the Panhellenic or placement exams are required. The degree is awarded upon successful completion of eight semesters and 240 ECTS credits.
Knowledge
The program provides students with comprehensive knowledge in early childhood education and care, developmental and educational psychology, learning theories, pedagogy, child development and well-being from birth to entry into compulsory education, as well as principles of inclusive education and children's rights. Graduates acquire a solid theoretical and scientific background in research methodology, curriculum planning, assessment of child development and learning, collaboration with families and communities, and the operation of early childhood education and care settings through the use of contemporary research findings and interdisciplinary approaches.
Skills
Graduates develop skills in designing, implementing, and evaluating educational programs for infants and young children, observing and assessing child development and learning, creating safe, creative, and inclusive learning environments, and applying contemporary pedagogical approaches. They acquire effective communication and collaboration skills with children, families, interdisciplinary professionals, and community organizations, while developing the ability to use scientific evidence for informed decision-making, integrate educational technologies, conduct research activities, and engage in reflective professional practice.
Competences
Graduates are capable of practicing professionally as Early Childhood Educators, organizing and supporting the education, care, and development of infants and young children, acting responsibly and ethically, collaborating effectively within interdisciplinary settings, evaluating and continuously improving their pedagogical practice through critical reflection and research-based approaches, and pursuing postgraduate studies and research in the academic fields covered by the Department.
