Description

The Degree in Sociology of the University of Crete certifies the completion of studies in the field of Sociology, providing graduates with theoretical training and research skills for the analysis of social phenomena, institutions, and social relations. Graduates acquire knowledge of the structure and functioning of contemporary societies, social inequalities, cultural processes, and social change, as well as competencies in applying sociological theories and research methods in educational, research, and professional contexts.

Relation to Employment

Holders of the Degree in Sociology may be employed in education, social and applied research, social policy and local government institutions, as well as in organizations active in the fields of social intervention, cultural management, and social data analysis. The curriculum provides theoretical and methodological training, while also offering the opportunity to obtain a Certificate of Pedagogical and Teaching Competence. For employment in education are classified under the PE78.

Access Requirements / Progression Opportunities

 Admission to the program requires a high school diploma and successful participation in national-level examinations or qualifying examinations.

Knowledge

Graduates of the Program acquire knowledge of major sociological theories, social research methods, and the analysis of social phenomena, institutions, and social relations. At the same time, they become familiar with issues related to social inequalities, cultural processes, social change, and contemporary social problems, as well as with theoretical and methodological approaches to the study of society and human behavior.

Skills

Graduates of the Program develop skills in the collection, processing, and analysis of social data, the application of qualitative and quantitative social research methods, and the use of sociological theories for the interpretation of social phenomena. At the same time, they acquire skills in critical thinking, academic documentation, the preparation of research papers, and the presentation of findings, as well as competencies in the use of research and digital tools in educational, research, and professional contexts.

Competences

Graduates of the Program are able to analyze and interpret social phenomena and social change, design and conduct social research, and apply sociological knowledge and methods in educational, research, and professional contexts. At the same time, they are capable of collaborating within interdisciplinary environments, managing and presenting research data, and addressing issues related to social policy, social intervention, and the analysis of contemporary social problems through a scientific and critical approach.
