Description
The Degree in Philosophy of the University of Crete certifies the completion of studies in philosophical thought and the history of philosophy, providing graduates with theoretical training and research skills in the analysis of philosophical theories, concepts, and schools of thought from antiquity to the modern era. Graduates acquire knowledge and competencies in critical thinking, argumentation, and the interpretation of philosophical, social, and cultural issues, as well as the ability to apply philosophical knowledge in educational, research, and cultural contexts.
Relation to Employment
Holders of the Degree in Philosophy may be employed in education, research, cultural and social institutions, lifelong learning organizations, as well as in fields related to the analysis and management of social and cultural issues. The curriculum provides academic training in philosophical thought, ethics, political and social philosophy. For employment in education, graduates are classified under the PE02 Philologists sector, in accordance with the current legal framework.
Access Requirements / Progression Opportunities
Admission to the program requires a high school diploma and successful participation in national-level examinations or qualifying examinations.
Knowledge
Graduates of the Program acquire knowledge of the main characteristics of major philosophical schools of thought and significant philosophical issues, while also developing the ability to understand and evaluate different philosophical approaches. They become familiar with the foundations and methodology of philosophical work, acquiring the necessary background for the development and assessment of philosophical argumentation. In addition, they gain academic knowledge in the fields related to their potential employment as philologists in Secondary Education, in accordance with the current legal framework.
Skills
Graduates of the Program develop skills in the analysis and critical approach of philosophical theories, the construction of coherent philosophical argumentation, and the systematic examination of philosophical issues through the study of classical philosophical texts and the preparation of research papers. At the same time, they acquire teaching, communication, and collaboration skills, as well as competencies in the effective use of educational, technological, and informational material and Information and Communication Technologies in their educational, research, and professional activities. Through practical training and familiarity with different fields of philosophical application, they also enhance their ability to orient themselves and respond effectively to the demands of a multidimensional professional environment.

Graduates of the Program are able, through the broader educational background and skills they acquire, to design their academic and professional path and adapt to the demands of a constantly evolving labor market. At the same time, they are capable of applying philosophical and scientific knowledge in their everyday and professional activities, both in the public and private sectors, combining knowledge from related disciplines and developing interdisciplinary collaborations. In addition, they possess the appropriate academic background, as well as critical and synthetic thinking abilities, enabling them to formulate research questions and hypotheses and to continue their studies at postgraduate level.
