Description
The Degree in Philology of the University of Crete certifies the completion of studies in the fields of Classical Philology, Byzantine and Modern Greek Philology, and Linguistics, providing graduates with specialized knowledge of the Greek language and literature from antiquity to the modern era. Graduates acquire theoretical training, research and analytical skills, as well as competencies in applying philological knowledge within educational, research, and cultural contexts.
Relation to Employment
Holders of the Degree in Philology may be employed in education, research, cultural and publishing institutions, and documentation centers, as well as in fields related to language processing, translation, editing, and text production. The curriculum provides academic training in language, literature, and linguistic analysis, while also including courses that support the pedagogical and teaching dimension of the degree. For employment in education, graduates are classified under the PE02.
Access Requirements / Progression Opportunities
Admission to the program requires a high school diploma and successful participation in national-level examinations or qualifying examinations.
Knowledge
Graduates of the Department acquire knowledge of the structure, historical development, and function of the Greek language, as well as the study of ancient, Byzantine, and Modern Greek literature. At the same time, they become familiar with theoretical and methodological approaches to philological and linguistic analysis, the interpretation of literary texts, the critical editing of texts, and the study of language and culture within their historical and social context.
Skills
Graduates develop skills in philological and linguistic analysis, the processing and interpretation of written discourse, as well as the evaluation and synthesis of information derived from different texts and sources. In addition, they acquire competencies in academic writing, text documentation and editing, the use of research tools, and the application of analytical methods to issues related to language, literature, and culture.
Competences
Graduates are able to apply philological and linguistic knowledge in educational, research, and cultural contexts, analyze and interpret texts from different historical periods, and approach issues of language and literature through scientific and critical thinking. Furthermore, they are capable of organizing and presenting research material, participating in interdisciplinary collaborations, and responding to professional demands related to linguistic communication, education, and the management of cultural content.
