Description
The Bachelor’s Degree of the Department of History and Archaeology is offered by the University of Ioannina through the Department of History and Archaeology and provides two specialization tracks: (a) “History” and (b) “Archaeology,” offering comprehensive academic training in the fields of History, Archaeology, and Art History. The curriculum covers a broad chronological range, from antiquity to the modern era, and approaches the past through written sources, material culture, and cultural practices. Students acquire theoretical and methodological knowledge that enables them to critically analyze historical phenomena and interpret archaeological data. The degree aims to provide rigorous academic formation for specialized graduates, equipping them with opportunities for professional employment in education, the archaeological service, and related cultural sectors.
Relation to Employment
Graduates of the Department possess the research competence to pursue postgraduate studies in the humanities and social sciences, as well as the skills required for employment in the public and private sectors in Greece and abroad. They work in research, archival, and cultural institutions, as well as in education, contributing to the promotion of the humanities.
Access Requirements / Progression Opportunities
Admission to the program requires a Secondary School Leaving Certificate (High School Diploma) and successful participation in national-level examinations or qualifying entrance examinations.
Knowledge
Graduates of the Department acquire a broad education in historical and archaeological studies, as these evolve within the international academic context. They become familiar with the theory and methodology of History, Archaeology, and Art History, as well as with key fields of the humanities and social sciences, such as Anthropology, Sociology, and Folklore. They also possess a solid knowledge of historical experience, culture, intellectual formation, and social organization, as well as the study of archival sources and archaeological remains.
Skills
Graduates, depending on their specialization and practical training, possess skills related to teaching in secondary education, conducting research in history and culture, and the protection, study, and promotion of cultural heritage. They are also active in research centers and cultural institutions, participate in knowledge dissemination activities, and provide specialized services in fields such as archaeology, archiving, and documentation, while being able to take on roles as experts or consultants in relevant projects.
Competences
Graduates of the Department of History and Archaeology, in addition to their core academic knowledge, are able to apply their knowledge in practice, communicate in a foreign language, and work in international, interdisciplinary, and collaborative environments. They can design and implement research projects, coordinate teams, and act with respect for multiculturalism, cultural diversity, cultural heritage, and the environment, demonstrating professional and ethical responsibility while promoting free academic thought.
