Description
The Bachelor’s Degree in Molecular Biology and Genetics is a higher education qualification in the field of biological sciences. It certifies that graduates possess academic training in molecular biology, genetics and biotechnology. The qualification demonstrates that graduates understand cellular and genetic mechanisms and their applications in biomedical and biotechnological research. It also certifies the development of experimental and analytical skills necessary for scientific research. The degree corresponds to Level 6 of the Hellenic and European Qualifications Frameworks and provides access to postgraduate education or employment in research and biotechnology sectors.
Relation to Employment
Graduates may work in research institutes, biomedical and biotechnology laboratories, pharmaceutical and food industries, public or private research organisations, as well as in education or related scientific sectors.
Access Requirements / Progression Opportunities
Admission to the program requires a Secondary School Leaving Certificate (High School Diploma) and successful participation in national-level examinations.
Knowledge
Upon completion of the undergraduate study program, students of the Department of Molecular Biology and Genetics will have:
• acquired fundamental theoretical knowledge in the field of Biosciences and will be able to describe the basic concepts and principles that govern them.
• acquired specialized theoretical knowledge in the field of Molecular Biology and Genetics and their applications, and will be able to analyze in depth the concepts and principles that govern them.
• acquired basic knowledge and laboratory skills in Bioscience Technology, as well as specialized knowledge and laboratory skills in the field of Molecular Biology and Genetics Technology, which enable them to pursue careers in fields and professions related to Biosciences (as described in Section 5 of the present document) or continue with postgraduate studies.
Skills
Upon completion of the undergraduate study program, students of the Department of Molecular Biology and Genetics will have:
• developed skills in evaluating results, formulating scientific hypotheses, and designing experiments, following the scientific method.
• developed skills in the written and oral presentation of scientific data and ideas.
Competences
Graduates are able to conduct scientific research, collaborate in multidisciplinary research environments and apply biotechnology methods to biological problems.
