The Department of Theology of the Aristotle University of Thessaloniki aims to conduct research and offer high-level education in the scientific field of theology and in the scientific study of religion and culture.

Knowledge

Graduates of the undergraduate program of the Department of Theology, depending on the courses and internship they have chosen, are able to 1. know the historical, social, and cultural significance of religious traditions, 2. critically understand the mechanisms by which religious faith may influence and feed the moral perceptions and behavior of individuals and communities, 3. know the ways in which specific religions and religious institutions are structured and organized, 4. critically understand the interaction between the Orthodox Tradition, other Christian confessions, religions and societies, both in history and in the contemporary world, 5. critically understand social reality and especially its problems, 6. critically understand the dialogue between religious traditions and the  philosophical systems, 7. to know the methodology of the various directions of theological and religious studies as well as the nature of theological research and reflection.

Skills

Graduates of the undergraduate program of the Department of Theology, depending on the courses and internship they have chosen, are able to 1. adapt to a practical level the knowledge they have acquired regarding the complexity of different mentalities, social behaviors and aesthetic responses, as well as the interaction of theological ideas, religious beliefs, values, sacred texts, art forms, social data and politics, 2. participate in the dialogue between religious traditions and philosophical systems, 3. communicate through oral and written language using the terminology and techniques accepted in the respective profession, 4. convey theological and religious concepts to the wider public, 5. apply in practice the theory of teaching theological and religious data

Competences

Graduates of the undergraduate program of the Department of Theology, depending on the courses and internships they have chosen, are able to 1. sensitively approach issues of gender and equal opportunities, 2. act on the basis of ethics and morality, 3. evaluate new and evolving forms of religious beliefs and practices with an ecumenical spirit and a willingness to compromise, 4. read texts critically in the context of their historical relevance and make the necessary extensions to contemporary reality, 5. apply theological knowledge in professional and social life with respect for human rights and European values, 6. sensitively approach issues of social prejudice and exclusion
