Description

Knowledge: The doctoral dissertation in the Department leads to the acquisition of high level knowledge for a specific scientific domain the sciences of social anthropology and history, as well as the development of skills for the application of scientific methodology and the conduct of original research. The Doctoral Diploma programme includes the procedures for the selection of the candidate doctors, the preparation of a research proposal, and the final conduct of the doctorate dissertation on social anthropology and history. The candidate doctor conducts autonomous research under the supervision of a member of the Department's faculty and the supervision of other two members of the faculty. In order to award the Doctorate diploma, it is necessary to submit and successfully defend its preparation before a seven-member examination board. The time for the conduct of the doctoral dissertation is provided in the bylaws of the institution.
Skills: The Doctorate in Social Anthropology and History advances skills with regard to research in the interdisciplinary fields negotiated by the Department in the fields of cultural anthropology, gender and kinship anthropology, education anthropology, medical anthropology, Greek ethnography, music anthropology, ethnography of other cultural areas, social history and cultural history of Modern and Current Greece, the history of medieval and early modern era, the history of the Ottoman Empire, the history of Greek antiquity, etc. Each year, following a decision by the General Assembly of Special Composition, the thematic subjects of interest for the Department are announced and candidates are called to submit applications for participation. The thematic domains follow international concerns and aim to attract highly motivated candidates for the generation of critical knowledge on the above fields.
Competences: The holders of a doctorate acquire specialized competence in their fields of research, by combining the primary research with literature research, acquire a critical competence and complete skills for the conduct of their research and the ability for original and socially sensitive application of its findings.
